Background

Diabetes Mellitus is being considered as a pandemic disease of the 21st century.

Today, more than 285 million people suffer from Diabetes worldwide, an almost eight-fold increase in just over 20 years. It is anticipated that the number of diabetic patients will rise sharply to affect 440 million people worldwide in developed and developing countries by 2030, in particular spreading to younger populations.

Currently, available treatments focus only on the improvement of the symptoms of Diabetes, but no cure of diabetic patients or prevention of Diabetes based on restoration or preservation of pancreatic beta-cell mass and function exists.
